The Bridesmaid

by Charles Richard Laing

After a private moment with her new husband, the bride returned to the reception. Everyone had been waiting for her. It was time to throw the bouquet. With her back turned she tossed the flowers into the crowd of single women. Most of the superstitious girls darted away from it as if it was a live hand grenade, but a few entered into the spirit of the affair and tried to pluck it from the air.

Angie, the tallest and most aggressive of the bunch, triumphantly emerged from the scrum with the bouquet in hand.

“I’m next,” she said with a radiant smile on her lovely face. Her joy was short-lived.

“You could have been,” the bride said bitterly. “But you couldn’t wait.”

For such a tiny gun, it made a thunderous noise when the trigger was pulled. In that instant the unfaithful bridesmaid joined the unfaithful husband in eternal bliss.
