Homeland
When German-born Peter Mueller underwent brain surgery, he woke up with an Irish brogue. The doctors could not explain why to his family, and no one had the heart to tell him that he did not come from the land of the little people.
When grandchildren came into the picture, his new wife encouraged him telling the wee lads about the ol' country during their extended visits. One particular time he explained how it was custom to leave a bottle of whiskey out on the stoop for the Leprechauns. After a week of neighborhood parents complaining about drunken teenagers, he was banned from any more future stays.
In his safety deposit box, he kept a vial of soil and his passport. It was dirt he had taken with him when he visited Germany on his 2nd honeymoon with his first wife. His family had left the country in the 1930's seeking a better life. The only other time he was in Germany, he was dressed in an American uniform fighting against his blood. He wept when he collected the dry earth and made his first wife swear he would be buried with it so even through death he would never forget.
When he died, they buried him. The vial and passport were left in the bank.
